Halloween

Just a reminder that our Halloween raffle will be held this Friday, Oct 31st. All proceeds will be going towards the St. Patrick Parish Restoration Fund.

Secondly, on Friday all kindergarten students have the opportunity to bring their Halloween costumes to school. They will be allowed to wear their costumes for approx. one hour; there will be a kindergarten "costume parade."

Please send your child's costume to school in a bag. Do not send any pieces to school (masks, crowns, etc.); we do not want they to get lost or broken. Children will need to sit and  move in their costumes. They should be able to put on and take off their costumes independently thus something they can wear on top of their clothes is recommended.

Thanks for your cooperation! We are looking forward to a fun day.

Hat day

We enjoyed wearing our hats today! Thank you for your generous donations to the United Way.

How does a pumpkin grow?

Last week we looked at a white pumpkin and an orange pumpkin.

We wondered if the insides of the pumpkins were the same or different. Did they look, smell or feel the same? We recorded our predictions. Next, we cut open the pumpkins.

That afternoon, we talked about what pumpkins need to grow. We knew they needed:
  • seeds
  • water
  • sun
  • soil

We wondered what would happen if we put soil and water in our pumpkin. Would the seeds grow?

Over the next week we watched and watered the soil and seeds. We created a pumpkin observation chart and recorded daily.

On Monday we noticed two small sprouts! We talked about why they were growing near the side of the pumpkin (because the seeds are on the side of the pumpkin, not in the middle).

On Wednesday we observed that there were three sprouts and they had all grown. But, we also noticed that the pumpkin was getting rotten and moldy. We decided that it was time to throw out the pumpkin.

But we still wanted to observe the sprouts and watch them grow. We decided to replant the sprouts.

When we transplanted the sprouts, we made a very interesting discovery. Some of the seeds deeper in the pumpkin had begun to sprout too! We just couldn't see them under the soil. They were developing roots.

The life cycle of a pumpkin

Clink on the YouTube clip below to learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin.

We took turns on the Smart Board arranging the images of the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Making puffy paint

This morning we worked together to make some puffy paint. Due to its texture, this homemade paint dries 3D, giving it a puffy appearance.

We took turns adding and mixing the ingredients. We also learned that in order to make our puffy paint orange, we needed to mix yellow and red food colouring together.

Click here to see the puffy paint recipe.

All about pumpkins

We have been talking and learning about pumpkins.

First we worked together to describe our pumpkin.

Next we began to wonder, how can we measure our pumpkin? We brainstormed a list of different ways and materials we could use to measure our pumpkin. First, we thought we could measure the height of the pumpkin using cubes.

Next, we measured around the pumpkin using yarn.

We recorded our findings.

We also measured the height of the pumpkin using rulers and markers.

Saunders Farm

We had a fabulous time at Saunders Farm on Friday.

Thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers who helped to make the day such a success.

A few reminders

Just a reminder that picture day is this Thursday, October 16th.

*make sure not to wear any green clothing. The pictures are going to be taken in font of a green screen. We don't want anyone to blend into the background.

Our field trip to Saunders Farm is this Friday, October 17th.

The St. Anne Annual Monster Mash Halloween Dance is this Friday, October 17th from 6:30-8:30.

Our apple inquiry

Over the past two weeks, we have been learning all about apples. We began by describing them and labeling the different parts of an apple in both French and English.

We learned that there are many different kinds of apples. We had the opportunity to taste four different types of apples: golden delicious, gala, granny smith and mcintosh. We made a graph by choosing our favorite.

Next we made applesauce together as a class. We discussed what items and ingredients we would need to make applesauce. We followed the recipe, step by step and measured all ingredients.

Enjoying all of our hard work!

Making apple prints with paint.

Our next experiment: do apple seeds float or sink? We saved some apple seeds and wondered, if we put them in water, would they sink or float. Some thought they would float because seeds are small. While others thought they would sink because they are hard. We made a graph with our predictions.

To our surprise, half of the seeds sank and half of them floated.
